Hiraeth is a Welsh word with no exact English translation. It means both longing and belonging. I think of it as Source Code. It is ancient and ancestral - rooted in a place, a culture. It is a type of yearning or nostalgia or visceral recognition of "home". If you have somewhere that makes your blood thrill, where you feel a strong atavistic connection to the landscape, that is hiraeth. It is the feeling you get when something triggers a memory of that connection, like the smell of scones your mother used to cook, or the shape of a tree you climbed as a child. For me, it is the mountains of North Wales, they pull me like a magnetic when they come into sight from any direction. It is the warm Welsh tapestry blankets tucked tightly on my grandmother's beds. It is the dense colours and cool touch of slate and copper from the deep rich earth of Wales.
My shop will be a tribute to my own hiraeth. But I hope you will enjoy exploring it and maybe you will find something unexpected that satisfies your own nostaligic sense of home.
